He's got an infectious disease!!!

Zeb finally let go of the fevers (after three and a half rotten days) and woke up this morning with a wonderful rash. The pictures just don't do it justice. I did some research on his symptoms and came up with an exact match. The kid has Roseola (aka baby measles). I couldn't believe how closely his symptoms and behaviors matched the description of Roseola. One of the ER docs in the ward agreed that was most likely the diagnosis. As creepy as the picture of that cartoon baby looks- it is a very accurate portrayal of Zeb right now! Luckily the rash doesn't cause any pain or discomfort and it means he's almost finished with the virus.

"A child with roseola typically develops a mild upper respiratory illness, followed by a high fever (often over 103° Fahrenheit, or 39.5° Celsius) for up to a week. During this time, the child may appear fussy or irritable and may have a decreased appetite and swollen lymph nodes (glands) in the neck. The high fever often ends abruptly, and at about the same time a pinkish-red flat or raised rash appears on the child's trunk and spreads over the body."

To the average person Roseola manifests itself as a cold. Unfortunately for us, the rugrat is anything but average. Thank heavens he didn't have any seizures. They accompany 15% of the kids that get Roseola at his age! I would have freaked.

Zoom in on this pic to get a good look at the poor rashy rugrat and swollen little eyes. He's such a goofball. Oh, and apparently he wasn't contagious while he exhibited the symptoms- just beforehand.

Good grief. Shouldn't there be some kind of maximum on sick days kids can get in a year? I feel bad for you and Kent! Hang in there.

Aaron got roseola. It was very scary - and the rash is uglyramma, but, apparantly - according to our doctor at the time - it's pretty common. Zeb's eyebrows look so red in this pic! :) Maybe it's due to the rash, though. What a cutie. I've never noticed your crib before - it's way cute.

PS - I remember the FEVER being scary ... after the fever was gone - it was just ugly red skin for a week, but Aaron acted normal. It's not contagious to adults is it? I don't remember.

michelle- his fever was WAY scary. The kid was so dang hot! and roseola is contagious to adults in the beginning, but for adults it's just a regular cold- no fevers or rash.

I wondered if it was roseola, I should have tried to point you in the right direction. Taylor had the same thing around that same age (not that it's age related). The high fever without other symptoms just made me wonder. I'm glad he's on the road to recovery. When does kent have to leave?

Natalie got Roseola a couple months ago. It's such a weird little disease. Hers seemed pretty mild thank goodness, but like you said, easy to diagnose.

I'm glad he is doing better. Matthew had the same thing while we were in Idaho. Sick kids are so much fun.

Wow, that description just nailed what Cohen has been showing. He's had a blazing fever for the past 4 or so days (peaked at around 104). This morning he woke up, little to no fever anymore, but with little red rashes all over. Except "decreased appetite" should read "no appetite". I can't get Cohen to eat a thing! Glad to hear he's doing better (it tells me there's an end in sight).
