the big jump

Zeb took the big leap this morning. We knew it was coming- we just weren't sure when. At seven he catapulted headfirst out of his crib and onto the floor. He wailed like a banshee baby- but only out of fear. He did make quite the loud thud but there are no contusions or lacerations anywhere on his body- and he was very quickly consoled with his blanket and a train. So, now we have to decide when to make the switch to his bed. I suppose with a new rugrat in 7 weeks- now is as good a time as any for the switch. When do most kids go to a bed? We already have a full/queen bunk bed bottom all set up in the room that will be his. It is low to the ground- he can get on and off by himself- and he really likes it. Any suggestions?
Maybe we should get a crib tent?! I think that this is akin to the child leashes- very effective and practical (it even appears to keep the cats out)- but a little strange and zoo like.

The time to put your kid in a bed completely depends on your patience and your kids' personality. Some kids are so excited to get into a big kid bed that they have no problems. Our kids seem to take the new freedom as an invitation to test our patience as parents and spend about an hour each night getting out of bed to say hi to us. We weren't ready to deal with that so we got the crib tent for Van and it saved me. Until he learned to unzip it, little houdini. So we actually safety pinned it shut for a while. Their just not very durable. We had heard that they tear at the seam pretty easily and ours did, but luckily we were pretty much done with it at that point. We might be using it to keep Van OUT of Porter's crib, though. Good luck!

He'll need some time to adjust to another kiddo in his bed,so if he can handle it, now might give enough time for him to be in a big boy bed and hand over the crib to his little sibling...make him feel like the "big" brother, not feeling like he's been kicked out and replaced! That was Dr.Phil speaking...Yaya says:"Do whatever you want!" I've never seen the tent thing. Pretty cool, wish I had one when my youngest was a teenager...with a lock and key.

You better get the tent just to keep your cat out (as pictured.) We have lucked out with Jansen. He STILL basically sleeps in a crib. The side folds down though and he can totally get out EASILY but for some reason never does and even waits for us to come get him in the morning. So you dont think the fall scared him enough to keep him in there?

Did you ever end up getting a leash for Zeb? And only 7 more weeks? That sounds crazy close! How exciting!

Don't the pictures say it all? I bet there was a board discussing the marketing for this crib tent. It went something like this:

person#1: "What people need is something simple and practical to put over their child in their crib. It should definitely keep out cats, especially black ones."

person#2: "That's exactly what I was thinking. Now what other totally impractical and useless things can we invent and charge an arm and a leg for?"

I think the lower bunk is perfect!

I've read, and with our own experience, that if you're going to change Zeb to a bed, do it before the baby comes so he doesn't feel like he got kicked out because there's a new baby. Spencer was in a twin bed by 16 months (we used a bed side gate thing-a-ma-bobber...to make sure he didn't roll off) Patience definitely played a roll...I sat in a rocking chair so he could see me and so I could make sure he didn't get out of bed. That lasted 2 - 3 weeks. That's just personal experience. 7 weeks - how fun!

The child in that picture looks like she's trying to escape! What a good idea, though. I think I would have loved it as a kid, having my own tent, if it wasn't pitched to me as a cage.

The lower bunk IS perfect. Although that cage idea is sure tempting.... :)

Keep him in a crib as long as possible, we actually turned the crib over and put the matress on the floor for our Kaylee because she kept trying to climb out and falling. I know it sounds cruel but at 18 months old it kept her safe and we didnt have to worry about her getting hurt. The crib to bed can be a tough transition... good luck!!

I put Xander in a toddler bed (we didn't have room for a twin at the time) when he was a little over 2, and that was just because I was pregnant. Mara is 2 and 1/2 now and still in a crib (she is a hyperactive child and I'm afraid of what she'll do in a real bed). We are keeping her in it until we have another one that needs it, so probably another year! lol
Good luck! It was hard for Xander to learn to stay in bed, but he got it eventually!

I left my kids in the crib as long as possible, but I've been amazed that switching them to the bed was always fine and we rarely have to remind them to stay put. Katie learned how to climb out of the crib sometime after she started walking and she never acted hurt or scared so we just left her in it until Taylor came along. Maybe she did land on her head a couple times, maybe that explains some of her craziness! oh well! :>

Livvy was in a "big girl" toddler bed around 20 months. We bought it off KSL and the minute she saw it, she never went back to her crib. We encouraged the "big girl" part of it and how "little babies" sleep in cribs. Right now Micah is 14 months and loves to sit on Livvy's bed like it is his own. I bet Zeb will do fine in a "big boy" bed, just try it out with naps first and see how he does before trying bedtime.
