there's something the matter with our rugrat

I tried to get a video of his problem- but it's really too sad for me to make him try. I know this picture is rather deceiving- he looks happier than ever- but he won't walk. He won't put any weight on his right leg. He is totally happy to sit and play with toys, read books, watch his thomas dvd and do anything else that doesn't require him to put weight on his leg. I have NO earthly idea what could possibly be wrong- and to be honest it makes me a little nervous. I called his pediatrician- but it's veteran's day and they are closed. We did have the neighbor (who just finished his family practice rotation) check him out and he is not sensitive to touch or weight bearing pressure on any part of his leg- has no swelling, redness, fever, etc. Zeb even giggled when he was checking his legs. We've checked his testicles (I thought maybe it was hernia related or something) and his hips too. He is happy and pleasant unless he has to walk-and then he winces and cries and holds his leg up like a lame wounded puppy! He woke up from his nap like this. This morning he ran around and played with friends, helped me clean his room, and has eaten all of his meals just fine. I thought his leg was asleep when he woke up- but it's been 3 and a half hours now. Perhaps I am grossly overreacting- but it just isn't normal Zeb. Of course I think that he has a bone tumor or leukemia or something. And Kent is at school until at least eight because he has three tests in the next seven days (he always seems to be insanely busy the times that Zeb has something wrong). I've decided to see what happens over the next little while and call his pediatrician if the condition doesn't improve by tomorrow morning. Has this ever happened to any of your kids? or to anyone you know? any suggestions!?

Um....I did notice that he's missing a sock. You should look into that as a possible cause.

Don't you know an ER doc or Ortho resident you could call? That happened to Tanner but after he had been playing. He was fine but I had to carry him around for a few days. Hope it's nothing and he's back to running tomorrow!

kenna- we actually did talk to lindsay's dad (ortho) and he said the same- just wait it out and watch for a fever or anything else suspicious. Good to hear that it happened to tanner and all was normal though :) i think it happened to mimi wells last year too- and it lasted two or three days and then disappeared.

Maybe he stepped on something and it's in his foot...just a guess, poor little guy, hope it turns out good soon.

I agree with Lindsay about the sock... It is mighty suspicious.:)

I remember a few kids I saw this summer in the ER with similar symptoms and they never found anything wrong. Probably just something to do with growing up!

Hope he's back to all of his normal mischeviousness soon!

That's so sad - and stressful. He may have just twisted his ankle or knee or something too. I hope he's up and running tomorrow morning! Keep us informed.

Kent - today Aaron came home from school a little teary and told me that he just couldn't stop thinking about you all through the Veteran's Day assembly at school. :) You are missed. Be safe! Love you.

My guess is growing pains, too. Kaitlyn had really weird pains in her leg last Christmas and that is what we ended up attributing to it. For a second, at the beginning of the post I thought this was going to be about a diaper rash and I was going to have to giggle!

Well, the baby we knew had broken his leg, but he was crying and whimpering and whatnot, not just playing and eating like normal. I'll trade you for my kid. He's mostly fine, he's just taken to throwing up once a day for the past 3 days. no fever, just an excuse to lock me in the house FOREVER!!!

amy-sorry about the barf boy! I don't think I'll take the trade- I'm not in the mood for barf.

Erik told me I'm not funny, but I think it's too late to delete my comment....

Mimi did that for two days before we were supposed to leave Toledo. She wouldn't walk, and would cry in the night about her leg hurting really bad, but she was fine during the day (other than the not walking part). I ended up taking her in because our pediatrician was worried, but nothing was wrong.
