I need help....

Last night we had book club at my house and had a planning session. We came up with quite a lengthy book list and I want to schedule the next five months to carry us until summer. The problem is that I don't know which books to choose! I know most of you blog readers aren't in the book club here in Toledo but I could still use your help narrowing down the list, especially if you've read any of them and think they are fabulous or terrible/inappropriate. Plus, the list may be a good reading list for you too! Those of you participating in the book club, I need your help as well! so, to all: Cast your votes for the two you like best and/or want to read the most, plus any "don't read" votes. and if you have any other great suggestions, I'm all ears! Thanks for your help!

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
Mark Haddon
Book Thief Markus Zusak
To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee
Devil in the White City Eric Larson
Peter and the Starcatchers Dave Barry
My Sister's Keeper Jodi Picault
Ghost Map Steven Johnson
Hot Zone Richard Preston
Angry Housewives Eating Bon-bons Lorna Landvik
Not Without My Daughter Betty Mahmoody
Finer Points of Sausage Dog Alexander McCall Smith
Twelve Little Cakes Dominika Dery
The Oath
Khassan Baiev
(the last two are two of my favorites!)

I'm going to try and read all of them anyway! I absolutely LOVE having a good book to read! plus it gives me something great to do now that the big freeze is settling back in over Toledo (the news people call it the Arctic Blast)!

Leisy- I am signed up on Good reads and so many people tell you what they think of the books you are going to read. I will invite you to join- but I loved the book "The curios Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" It's a fun read, easy you could read it very fast. But I really liked it. "Finer points of Sausage Dog"-same author to "The No.1 women’s detective agency" I really like him as an author-So that sounds pretty good.

Anyways I will invite you to join the goodreads- go to your email and sign up. It's a lot of fun.

Considering the people who will be reading, I wouldn't suggest "Angry Housewives Eating Bon-bons," but that is mainly for the husbands of y'all. I'm mainly read things written before 1950, so I'm not much of a help. But, I will have you know, I did see the movie version of Not Without My Daughter, and it was rather moving. I think it made me a true Sally Field fan. So, I would be interested in that one, especially in these "terrorist times." Sorry for the lack of help.

OOOOOOOOO - I loved this post. Great picture :)! I also read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" - and I DID like it. However - it has HORRIBLE language, so I don't recommend it. Interesting, though. My two votes are: "The Book Thief" and "Not Without My Daughter". I've read "Not Without My Daughter" three times. Tyler and I even read it outloud to each other at one point. SOOOOOO good. I just recently read "The Book Thief", and I loved it .... interesting point of view and very moving. I'll be trying all of these others as well (the ones I haven't read, anyway). I'm sure everyone has alread read "To Kill a Mockingbird", don'tcha think?

PS - I love, love, LOVE Zeb's mac and cheese pictures. They are so cute and funny. Not having my own computer has slowed me down a bit in blogging, so I am just barely seeing them. Anywho - I'll be copying those pics. Hope that's okay. Love Zeb!!!!!!!! Love you guys, too! :)

To Kill a Mockingbird and Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons were already read in this bookclub, but a long time ago...don't know if we want to repeat.

I really do need to get into book club! That is one of my "resolutions" for the year. The one book I might suggest is Tuesdays with Morrie, it is so wonderful and it's an easy read. Most of the other books I have never heard of.

I vote for Book Thief...it sounded really interesting. I'd also like to read Not Without My Daughter, but To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic and one I haven't read for years!

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston is one of my favorite books ever, but that is probably because I love to read books about diseases, and Ebola absolutely fascinates me. Sorry I am blog stocking but hey we used to be neighbors so I guess it's ok.

I'm sad I couldn't make it to the meeting Tues. night. I was wondering what the new book was. I've always wanted to read Curious Incident because I loved the jacket cover...and it sold moderately well while I worked in the BYU Bookstore (it has bad language? That might not fly with some R.S. sisters). The Oath has a stirring synopsis: Russian doctor and his Hippocratic Oath. Book Thief has a fun & mysterious storyline...so it might be an easy book to breeze through compared to The Oath.

Hey, Leisy. You don't know me, but I am a friend of McKenna Shumway. I am the enrichment counselor in my ward and our Stake RS Presidency gave us a list of good books for our book night. I could email you the list if you are interested.

I've heard fabulous things about Peter and the Starcatchers and I loved Ladies #1 Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith so I'd be interested in the Finer Points of Sausage Dog. I'm going to hang onto that list. I heard the same recommendation on the Curious Incident of the Dog - Donna thought the book was really interesting, but the language a bit of a problem. She's listened to Devil in the White City and loved it, I don't think it was gruesome but a little creepy maybe if I remember right (not a warning, just an FYI). Can you tell I talk books with her a lot? :) And I'm not sure who Erin is either, but if you get that list from her will you pass it on to me?!

I'll definitely send it your direction! I already gave her my email address. If you hear about any others, let me know!

okay, I am back with more ideas...These are from Donna: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Rocket Boys by Homer something, Touching the Void, Endurance by Alfred Lansing, King Leopold's Ghost by Hochschild, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, Gift from the Sea by Ann Lindberg, the first Sherlock Holmes (can't remember the title).

Our book group has read Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness by Joel ben Izzy and I loved it enough to give it as a Christmas gift. Also "Do what you are" - a personality test and analysis for determining career. Sounds a little whacky for book group, but it was a nice change and I think we all liked it. Ours has read 1776 and some loved it, some thought it was super boring. I wish I'd been here when they read it. I want to read it, too. Also - A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel is our February read. A fun memoir about a small town girl. Stargirl by Spinelli is a youth book but really thought provoking, I thought. Whew. Maybe I should've just emailed this. :) Next time I will.

Hi Leisy! Robert's wife here - random, huh? Anyway, we love your blog and I figured it was time to post a comment - thanks for all the updates. I think you set a good example :)

Anyway, I am hosting book club next week so I appreciated this post, we have some planning to do out here too. On your list I have read "Not without my daughter" about 10 years ago and it was really intense. I thought it was a good read. I also read "Hot Zone" and it was a good one. I was on an airplane reading it when the person next to me started coughing and I was sure I would get sick and die... It looks like people are sending enough ideas to keep you going - if you need more, I could email our list.

Good luck, thanks for the posts! We love it! Zeb is super cute - we hope to meet him some day...sooner rather than later!

I haven't heard of or read most of those books. But I wouldn't mind reading "To kill a mockingbird" again. Have you read "the goose girl"? It is by Shannon Hale, and it is amazing! I loved it!

I know it's cliche but "To Kill a Mockingbird" is one of my favorites. "The curious incident of the dog in the night time" is good but some of the language in it is not. "Devil in the white city" is a little disjointed. "not without my daughter" is the stuff of nightmares and I still keep asking craig if he's going to drag me to greece and then go crazy and lock me up. Let me know what you decide. I tried to start a book club in KY but everybody said they didn't read (weird!).
